Shopify: Should you buy, sell or hold your shares in 2025?

The year 2025 presents crucial decisions for Shopify stock investors. With significant growth in the e-commerce industry and recent financial adjustments, the question remains: Does it make sense to buy, sell, or hold Shopify stock? This article will explore the current state of Shopify, recent financial transformations, and offer informed investment strategies.
The Current State of Shopify Stock
Shopify has cemented its status as one of the most dominant players in e-commerce, just behind Amazon. With a user-friendly interface and an extensive ecosystem of services, Shopify stands out from its competitors by offering added value to online merchants.
Although Shopify shares saw modest gains last year, they have rebounded nearly 300% since bear market lows in 2022. However, they are still trading more than 40% below their all-time high of 2021. This raises the question of whether the stocks are to buy, sell or hold, requiring further analysis.
A redesigned business model
Shopify appears to have learned from the mistakes of the previous decade, notably with the rushed launch of the Shopify Fulfillment Network (SFN). This service, well outside of their software expertise, involving significant fixed costs, was replaced by a collaboration with Flexport, allowing Shopify to become profitable again while offering logistics services to its customers.
The e-commerce industry remains promising. According to Grand View Research, it is expected to grow 19% annually through 2030, laying the foundation for Shopify’s favorable revenue performance and potentially, an increase in stock price in the years to come.
Shopify’s financial transformations
Despite a valuation still below its peak, Shopify’s growth has faltered in recent years. Its revenue of $6.1 billion in the first nine months of 2024 reflects a 23% increase from the previous year, although that remains short of the 47% growth seen pre-pandemic in 2019.
On the other hand, Shopify now benefits from a positive net income. Their profit of $726 million during the first three quarters of 2024 contrasts with a loss of $525 million in the same previous period. An expected 23% revenue growth in 2025 could further boost net income, which could push the stock price higher.
Analysis of valuation multiples
Shopify’s valuation metrics present a mixed picture. With a P/E ratio of 97 and a price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of 16, the values seem high. However, compared to Amazon During its growth period, Shopify could justify such multiples. During the pandemic, the sales ratio was above 40, indicating that current multiples are well below record highs, providing upside potential.
Shopify: buy, sell or hold?
In the current environment, it appears that Shopify stock should remain a winning bet. Although rising valuation and slowing growth may make investors cautious, an approach toprogressive purchase could be possible for those expecting future volatility.
With its strategic place in the US and global e-commerce sector and the prospect of continued growth in the sector into the 2030s, Shopify is expected to maintain its popularity among investors. This could encourage a rally in the stock to its record highs, or even beyond.
