In France, more than a million people carry out a professional activity while living below the poverty line. Valérie, Jérémy and Isabelle, three resilient workers, talk about the daily challenges they face, a mirror of a reality invisible to many. These testimonies highlight the precariousness with which they juggle, despite their fierce desire to get by.
Valérie, or the courage of a lonely mother
When the alarm rings at five in the morning, Valérie Debrie does not hesitate to leave the warmth of her bed to go to her workplace. Working part-time and paid the minimum wage, she must juggle two maintenance jobs to provide for her two children. Every month, once his rent is paid, he barely has enough left to live on. “We are used to it, we have to do this to earn our bread“, she said.
Work, for her, is an escape from solitude. “I can’t see myself staying at home, it’s impossible“, she says. However, the money is not always enough, and it is sometimes her eldest daughter who helps her out to finish the month. Valérie makes these sacrifices in silence, imprisoned in a cycle of precariousness with little hope of escape.

Jérémy, a generous heart in search of stability
Jérémy Delville, accompanying driver, feels deep satisfaction in his work helping people. However, his passion is not enough to fill his refrigerator. With a salary of €924 per month, of which €600 goes towards rent, his life evolves under the constant specter of anxiety. “We really feel deprived of everything. We don’t live, we survive“, he confides.
Although his hours are fragmented and insufficient, working offers him the illusion of a normal life. However, deep down, he knows that this situation is having an impact on his mental health, forcing him to abandon many simple pleasures for the sole joy of walks in the open air.

Isabelle, the silent strength of a protective mother
Isabelle Demarliere struggles to feed her family on a limited salary of €1,600 per month, a sum that seems insignificant in the face of life’s daily challenges. She left her previous job for family reasons and now works as a dental assistant. However, the budget still remains tight, and she has to rely on a solidarity grocery store to feed her three children and her husband, who is unable to work.
Dependence on such assistance is burdensome, especially for a mother concerned about the well-being of those close to her. “It’s not easy to say that when you work, you find yourself in a social grocery store“, she sighs, aware of the importance of continuing her efforts for better stability.
Behind the numbers, fragile lives
These poignant testimonies reveal a harsh reality that goes beyond the simple status of poor worker: anguish, day-to-day survival, and persistent hope despite everything. In France, between 1.1 and 2 million workers, depending on sources, live below the poverty line, prisoners of an economy which does not offer them the financial security expected from employment.
Glaring economic divisions
As poverty continues to rise and income inequality widens, these working poor remain stuck in their precarious situations, a problem that appears to be intensifying despite years of social progress. These testimonies highlight how crucial it is to re-examine the economic and social structures that keep millions of workers trapped in poverty despite their employment.
